Only time will tell if the enterprise likes this, or if they just further cemented Windows 7 as the new XP. I can't say that all this crap (like you're saying) is giving me good vibes about Win10. No modern UI/metro/whateverthey'recallingit stuff in there. But nope, you can't actually remove it in the Windows feature dialog - seems like they basically haven't touched that since Win7. That said, Cortana is "SearchUI.exe" - maybe that's telling?Īnd as for Onedrive, you can remove that from startup in Task Manager, same as in 8/8.1. And as for Edge, apparently the Windows features panel won't do it (even though IE11 is there). I would've thought you can disable Cortana from services.msc, but I haven't been able to find it there. I also spent a considerable amount of time going through the settings opting out of more "send us all your information" options, and there are a LOT, shouldn't it be opt in?
there are some notable improvements, but the downside is tremendous if you ask me. Coming from windows 7, it honestly feels like MS took all of my control away, and it feels like I just installed android on my PC. Now my question is: Is there any way to remove all those crappy apps I don't want that are constantly running in the background? Especially OneDrive, but also mail, calendar and others? Also, is there any way to remove the Edge browser? I don't like how MS is forcing all this crap on me, while at the same time collecting anything and everything they can. Assuming your personal data collection assistant is running. Quick tip though, if you right click the taskbar and hide the search, it still lets you search just by typing once you click the start button. Using search in windows explorer seemed to work though. To restore, make sure the folder is named exactly as before. If you locate the folder it's files are in (C:\Windows\SystemApps\_cw5n1h2txyewy), and end the task in task manager while very quickly renaming the folder before it comes back (don't delete any characters, just add an underscore or something, or you probably won't get it back easily) it will prevent Cortana from working. I found a way to fully disable it, since normally it pops right back up if you kill the process. Even with everything disabled the Cortana process sits there consuming roughly 40MB of ram, doing who knows what.
